Augusta utilities advance five-year water-meter project, secure $2 million for South Augusta sewer expansion

Augusta Utilities has announced a five-year project to replace water meters across Augusta, with the first work scheduled to begin June 15, 2026, in the Jamestown subdivision.

The June 11 announcement describes the work as a modernization project for Augusta’s water-metering system. The utility did not provide a total number of meters to be replaced or a timetable showing when work would reach each neighborhood.

Jamestown identified as first work area

Jamestown is the first location identified for the replacement program. The project is planned to extend over five years and apply across Augusta, but the available announcement does not set completion dates for individual areas or say when customers outside Jamestown should expect meter replacements.

The distinction is significant for customers following the citywide program: Augusta Utilities has identified the project’s overall duration and its initial work area, but not a neighborhood-by-neighborhood schedule.

$2 million secured for separate sewer project

In a separate development announced July 20, Augusta Utilities reported securing $2 million through the One Georgia Authority Hurricane Disaster Relief Program for a sewer expansion project in South Augusta.

The funding is associated with Hurricane Helene recovery and is designated to support the South Augusta expansion. The available announcement does not identify the project’s full construction cost, detailed scope or construction schedule. As a result, the $2 million should not be treated as the expansion’s total budget.

The meter replacement initiative and the sewer expansion funding are distinct projects. One addresses water-meter modernization throughout Augusta over a five-year period; the other directs recovery-related funding to sewer expansion in South Augusta.

New design standards also took effect

Augusta Water also reported that updated 2026 design and construction standards took effect July 1, 2026. New public water and sewer system designs in Augusta Utilities service areas must comply with those updated standards.

The standards apply to new public-system designs, while the meter program concerns replacement of existing water meters. Together with the sewer funding announcement, the updates set out separate current actions involving Augusta’s water and sewer infrastructure.

The next identified step in the meter initiative was the scheduled June 15 start in Jamestown. Augusta Utilities has not provided a further public timetable in the available announcements for the South Augusta sewer project or for meter replacements in other neighborhoods.
