Summer Streets expands to all five boroughs, with Manhattan event scheduled Aug. 1

New York City’s 2026 Summer Streets program was scheduled to return across all five boroughs, with a first-time Manhattan event set for Aug. 1 and a Bronx event set for Aug. 22.

The New York City Department of Transportation announced the expanded schedule on July 10. The agency described the program as a five-Saturday series running in July and August.

Summer Streets temporarily shifts access on selected avenues away from vehicle traffic, creating space for pedestrians and people on bicycles. The program applies to selected corridors, not every street in all five boroughs at once.

Manhattan and Bronx added to the series

NYC DOT and NYRR scheduled the Manhattan event for Aug. 1, 2026, and the Bronx event for Aug. 22, 2026. The agency said those were the first Manhattan and Bronx events in the series.

NYC DOT’s Summer Streets event page, published July 19, also listed both dates as part of the wider 2026 schedule. The program’s return to all five boroughs marked the citywide scope of the series, while individual events were planned for particular selected avenues.

The schedule is significant for people whose travel or daily activity uses the affected corridors. On event days, the designated avenues are intended to function as pedestrian and bicycle space rather than regular vehicle routes. That temporary change can involve residents, businesses, cyclists, drivers and other people using the streets nearby.

What remains known about the schedule

The approved information establishes that the Aug. 1 Manhattan event and Aug. 22 Bronx event were scheduled, as well as the five-Saturday July-and-August program. It does not provide a complete street-by-street closure map or operating hours for the Manhattan event.

Nor do the available materials establish attendance, traffic conditions or other results after the Aug. 1 date. The next listed event in the available 2026 schedule was the Bronx program on Aug. 22.

People planning travel through a Summer Streets corridor should check NYC DOT’s event information for the applicable route and schedule details. The agency’s published materials identify the dates and citywide program but do not, in the approved packet, document outcomes from the Manhattan event.
