Washington primary voters face Aug. 4 election and same-day registration deadline
Washington voters have until 8 p.m. Aug. 4 to deposit completed primary ballots in an official drop box. Voters who need to register or update their voter registration on Election Day also have until 8 p.m., but must complete those actions in person.
The deadlines mark the close of Washington’s 2026 primary voting period, which began July 17 and lasts 18 days. Aug. 4 is the scheduled date of the statewide primary under the Washington Secretary of State’s election calendar.
What voters can still do on Aug. 4
In-person voter registration and in-person registration updates remain available through 8 p.m. on primary day. That option applies to people who need to take either step on Aug. 4.
The deadline for online and mail registration for the primary was July 27. The state calendar distinguishes that earlier deadline from the Election Day in-person deadline, so voters seeking to register or change registration information on Aug. 4 must use the in-person option.
For voters who have completed a primary ballot, the calendar sets an 8 p.m. Aug. 4 deadline for depositing it in an official drop box. The calendar identifies the drop-box requirement and deadline; it does not describe Aug. 4 as the only day voters could cast a ballot because the voting period began July 17.
The same 8 p.m. time applies to both the in-person registration actions and official drop-box ballot deposits. That makes Aug. 4 the final day of the 18-day primary voting period as well as the last opportunity listed in the calendar for in-person registration or registration updates before primary voting closes.
Address changes may require county contact
The Secretary of State directs registered voters who missed an address change to contact their county elections division to receive a ballot. The statewide calendar does not say that every registration update automatically results in a replacement ballot.
That distinction is important for voters whose address information is not current. The state’s direction is to work with the county elections division in that circumstance, rather than assuming an update alone will produce a ballot.
The registration and ballot deadlines directly affect participation in the statewide primary because they provide the final opportunity for eligible Washington residents to register or update their information before voting closes. The official calendar does not provide statewide ballot-return totals, turnout projections, a list of contested races or a count of voters expected to use Election Day registration.
What comes after the primary
The next statewide election on the 2026 calendar is the Nov. 3 general election. Its voting period is scheduled to begin Oct. 16, creating another statewide voting window after the Aug. 4 primary.
For the immediate primary deadline, voters needing to register or update their registration on Election Day must do so in person by 8 p.m. Aug. 4. Completed primary ballots must be in an official drop box by that same time.
