Washington reaches final day before August primary as ballot deadlines close
Washington’s statewide primary is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, as the state reaches the end of its 18-day primary voting period and several ballot-access and voter-registration deadlines take effect.
The Washington Secretary of State’s 2026 elections calendar lists Aug. 4 as the primary date, the final day to file a write-in candidacy for the primary, and the deadline for in-person voter registration and voter updates for this election.
The preceding day, Aug. 3, is the last day that a void in candidacy can cause an office to reopen its filing period under the calendar. The calendar does not identify a specific office that reopened, nor does it establish that any candidacy was voided.
Deadlines cover candidates and voters
The Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 entries cover different stages of election administration. The Aug. 3 deadline concerns the limited circumstance in which a candidacy becomes void and an office’s filing period can reopen. It is not a general filing extension for every race, and the statewide calendar alone does not show whether that circumstance occurred in an individual contest.
For prospective candidates, Aug. 4 is the last day listed to file a write-in candidacy for the primary. That deadline applies to a separate route for candidacy from the possible reopening of a filing period following a void in candidacy.
For voters, Aug. 4 is also the final day for in-person registration and in-person updates to voter registration for the primary. The date therefore marks the end of the specified in-person registration opportunity for this election as well as the primary itself.
These deadlines affect Washington candidates and voters immediately before the statewide primary, including contests for state and local offices. The Secretary of State provides statewide election administration, registration and ballot information, while the calendar sets out the statewide election timetable.
Voting period began July 17
The 18-day primary voting period began July 17, according to the state calendar, and concludes with the Aug. 4 primary date. The calendar establishes the election timetable but does not provide turnout figures, candidate vote totals or results for particular races.
That distinction is significant in the election process. The primary date and the filing and registration deadlines are calendar events; they do not by themselves determine or certify the outcome of a contest. The official results process continues after Aug. 4.
The available state calendar also does not identify primary winners. No winner in an individual race can be established from the calendar alone because it contains no race-specific results or certified outcome information.
Certification follows the primary
After the primary, county canvassing boards must certify and transmit primary results by Aug. 18, 2026. The Secretary of State must then certify the primary results by Aug. 21, the calendar says.
The sequence separates the immediate deadlines from the subsequent results process. Aug. 3 is the final calendar date for an office to reopen filing because of a void in candidacy. Aug. 4 is the primary date and the deadline for write-in filings and specified in-person registration actions. Aug. 18 is the deadline for county canvassing boards to certify and transmit results, followed by statewide certification due Aug. 21.
The calendar does not report whether any office actually reopened after a candidacy void, and it does not supply turnout or contest-level results. Those omissions mean the available official information supports the statewide timeline, but not claims about a particular reopened race or a primary outcome.
For the immediate election schedule, the next date is Aug. 4. Election administration then moves to county certification and transmission by Aug. 18 and certification by the Secretary of State by Aug. 21.
