Nebraska’s 2026 candidate withdrawal and filing deadlines arrive Aug. 3
Nebraska candidates covered by specified general-election filing deadlines have until 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, to withdraw from the ballot. The same deadline applies to primary-election nominees and nominees selected by a party convention or committee who want to decline their nominations.
The deadline is an important point in the state’s preparation for the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. Under the Nebraska Secretary of State’s candidate filing guide, candidates who miss the applicable withdrawal deadline will appear on the ballot.
Who is covered by the withdrawal deadline
The Aug. 3 deadline applies to candidates whose filing deadlines fell on July 15 or Aug. 3. The Secretary of State’s official 2026 election calendar sets 5 p.m. as the cutoff for those candidates to withdraw.
It also sets the same cutoff for candidates nominated at the primary election or by a party convention or committee to decline a nomination. Declining a nomination and withdrawing as a candidate are distinct steps in the state’s election process.
The Secretary of State provides both a Candidate Withdrawal Form and a Declination of Nomination Form. The candidate filing guide says that candidates filing for the general election may withdraw by Aug. 3, and it specifies the ballot consequence for candidates who do not meet that deadline.
Appearing on the ballot after missing the deadline does not, by itself, establish whether a candidate intends to actively campaign. The state guide addresses ballot status rather than campaign activity.
Separate financial-interest filing requirement
Aug. 3 is also the final day for certain non-incumbent candidates to file required financial-interest statements. That requirement is separate from the candidate withdrawal and nomination-declination process.
The official election calendar identifies the financial-interest statement deadline for eligible non-incumbent candidates, while the candidate filing guide identifies the forms used to withdraw or decline a nomination. Candidates subject to more than one obligation must meet the applicable requirements separately.
The reviewed materials identify statewide deadlines and procedures. They do not name individual candidates who withdrew their candidacies, declined nominations or filed financial-interest statements by the deadline.
What happens before the November election
Nebraska’s general election is scheduled for Nov. 3. Before then, Sept. 11, 2026, is the last day for the Secretary of State to certify statewide ballot candidates, offices and issues, according to the state election calendar.
That certification deadline follows the Aug. 3 withdrawal and declination cutoff. The approved state materials do not provide a final candidate-by-candidate ballot list, and they do not identify which candidates, if any, took action by Aug. 3.
The final statewide ballot list may still be affected by objections, certification and ballot preparation. Those later administrative steps do not change the stated Aug. 3 deadline for affected candidates to remove their names through the withdrawal process or for eligible nominees to decline nominations.
For voters, the deadline helps determine which affected candidate names remain headed toward the Nov. 3 ballot. For candidates, it marks the last scheduled opportunity under the cited state rules to withdraw or, for qualifying primary and convention nominees, decline a nomination before statewide ballot certification proceeds.
