Virginia Beach projects Aug. 11 hearing and vote on Virginia Beach National Golf Club proposal

Virginia Beach plans to re-advertise a public-hearing notice for the proposed sale and redevelopment of Virginia Beach National Golf Club after discovering that an earlier notice understated the size of the property. The city now projects a public hearing and City Council vote for Aug. 11, 2026.

The city said its June 28 notice described the site as approximately 300 acres when it should have said approximately 350 acres. The Aug. 11 hearing and vote are projected, rather than final, until the corrected notice is formally advertised.

City Council has not yet voted to sell the property or authorize development.

What the proposal includes

Under the proposal, Virginia Beach National would remain a public golf course. Century Golf Partners would operate the course, which would be redesigned to retain 10 existing holes and construct or modify eight others.

The plan also includes 659 mixed-income housing units. The residential portion would still need conditional rezoning and additional action by both the Planning Commission and City Council, even if Council advances the proposed property sale.

The proposed purchaser would pay $17.94 million for the property. The city says the proposal includes $18.4 million in private investment, along with up to $10.2 million in additional private funding and a $4.3 million city infrastructure contribution.

Infrastructure and revenue estimates

The city identifies infrastructure connected to Tournament Drive and Princess Anne Road as part of the proposal. It estimates the project could generate $3.4 million in new annual tax revenue after stabilization. That figure is an estimate, not guaranteed revenue.

The decision would combine a proposed public-course operating arrangement with housing development, infrastructure spending and a potential sale of city property. The City Council hearing is the next projected public decision point, but the land-use approvals required for housing would continue through separate Planning Commission and Council actions.

Public discussion

The proposal was already the subject of public discussion in July. The city listed the proposed Virginia Beach National Golf development as a topic for a July 9 community meeting hosted by City Council members.

Residents seeking to follow the proposal should watch for the re-advertised hearing notice, which will establish whether the projected Aug. 11 hearing and vote proceed.
