Newark’s Brick City cleanup program continues through Aug. 22
Newark’s Brick City cleanup program is scheduled to continue on three remaining Saturdays in August after an Aug. 1 cleanup date listed by the city’s Department of Public Works. The remaining dates are Aug. 8, Aug. 15 and Aug. 22, with cleanups scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The city organized the 2026 volunteer series for Saturdays from April 4 through Aug. 22. Newark’s Department of Public Works says it provides cleaning supplies, snacks and water for volunteers.
August dates remain on the city schedule
Aug. 1 was among the dates on the department’s published 2026 Brick City schedule. The department’s weekly schedule identifies the next known cleanup opportunities as Aug. 8, 15 and 22.
Those future dates are scheduled dates, not a guarantee that conditions will remain unchanged. The city may update its schedule, including in response to weather or other operational considerations.
The official schedule establishes the series’ dates and hours, but it does not report how much litter was collected on Aug. 1. It also does not establish attendance or identify specific cleanup locations for that date.
Program links neighborhood cleanup with pollution prevention
The Brick City series is organized through Newark’s Department of Public Works and offers residents and other volunteers a recurring city-supported cleanup opportunity. By listing the remaining August Saturdays, the department has provided a near-term schedule for people seeking to take part before the series’ planned Aug. 22 conclusion.
Newark’s stormwater information identifies litter as material that can negatively affect the environment and water quality. The city describes stormwater-pollution prevention as an effort to keep pollutants from entering water bodies.
Removing litter is therefore consistent with the city’s pollution-prevention goals. But the available city materials do not provide monitoring results or other measurements showing a water-quality change from the Aug. 1 event or from the cleanup series overall.
What is known and what is not
The published program information confirms the April-to-August Saturday schedule, the 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. cleanup hours and the city-provided supplies, snacks and water. It identifies Aug. 22 as the final scheduled Saturday in the 2026 series.
Residents and volunteers considering the remaining dates should rely on city updates for any schedule changes. The Department of Public Works’ published dates currently list Aug. 8, Aug. 15 and Aug. 22 as the remaining August cleanup opportunities.
