Boise Foothills trail closures continue after Claremont Fire

Some Boise Foothills trails have reopened following the Claremont Fire, but others remain closed as firefighting and containment efforts continue, according to Ridge to Rivers.

The City of Boise-led trail partnership urged hikers, bikers and other users not to enter closed areas until officials clear them for recreation. The closures affect Hulls Gulch, Military Reserve and other foothills areas that were affected by the fire.

Closures remain in affected foothills areas

The Claremont Fire began July 6 in the Boise Foothills and spread across popular open-space reserves, prompting trail closures. Ridge to Rivers said in a July 14 notice that access conditions varied: some trails had reopened while others remained off limits.

The notice did not provide a final acreage figure or a final containment status. It also did not identify a date when all affected trails would reopen.

The Bureau of Land Management had listed Aug. 1 as the expected containment date, but Ridge to Rivers said that date could change. The expected date should not be read as confirmation that the fire was contained by then.

Fire previously prompted evacuations

Earlier reporting on July 7 documented that the fire had burned more than 6.9 square miles during its expansion. At that time, the Rocky Canyon RC-06 zone was under a Level 3 evacuation status, while Tollgate zones RC-01, RC-02 and RC-04 were under Level 2 status.

Those evacuation details reflect the earlier July 7 report, not a current evacuation update. The July 14 Ridge to Rivers notice focused on trail and open-space access rather than current evacuation levels.

What trail users should do

Ridge to Rivers is asking the public to respect posted closures and stay out of restricted areas while work continues. The agency’s notice makes clear that not every Boise Foothills trail is closed, but access remains limited in some areas affected by the fire.

For residents and recreation users, the next known step is to check official Ridge to Rivers updates before heading into the foothills. A newer official closure bulletin dated after the July 14 notice was not identified in the approved source material.
