Mayor Helena Moreno has created the Canal Street Renaissance Initiative, a city-coordinated effort focused on a 15-block stretch of Canal Street between Claiborne Avenue and the Mississippi River.
Moreno signed Executive Order HM-26-22 on July 28, 2026, establishing the initiative. The order provides the city’s official basis for coordinating work on the downtown corridor.
Initial focus is on repairs and conditions along the corridor
The current phase includes sidewalk and lighting repairs, cleanliness work, public-safety activity and enforcement. Axios New Orleans reported that the initiative is intended to coordinate existing resources rather than rely on major new city spending.
The effort brings city agencies together with law-enforcement partners, business districts and service providers. Entities identified in the initiative include the New Orleans Police Department, Louisiana State Police, Louisiana National Guard, Downtown Development District and French Quarter Management District.
The initiative applies to a major commercial and transit corridor. Residents, workers, businesses and visitors in the area are the groups identified as likely to encounter the coordinated work on repairs, quality-of-life enforcement and public-safety activity.
Redevelopment concepts are not yet approved outcomes
Longer-term phases contemplate retail recruitment, upper-floor development and possible incentive measures. Those measures remain planned or under study, not approved results of the executive order.
The available reporting and the executive order do not provide a block-by-block construction schedule, dates for particular sidewalk or lighting repairs, or a deadline for the next phase. The packet also does not establish a specific expected reduction in crime, homelessness or vacancy.
For now, the confirmed action is the creation of a framework for coordinated work along Canal Street, with the immediate emphasis on basic corridor conditions and enforcement rather than a defined capital-project timetable.
