University of Minnesota to host generative AI and science workshop Aug. 4-5

The University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering will host a two-day workshop in Minneapolis focused on generative artificial intelligence and its potential role in scientific discovery.

The event, titled “Frontiers of GenAI & Science,” is scheduled for Aug. 4-5, 2026, at the McNamara Alumni Center. Programming is set to run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.

It will be the fourth workshop in the Minnesota AI for Science Series, which is associated with the college’s CSE Data Science Initiative.

Focus on AI and research questions

The planned workshop will bring together researchers from academia, industry, government and national laboratories. Its stated purpose is to examine two connected questions: how generative AI may accelerate scientific discovery, and how scientific problems may help shape future AI systems.
