Four quantum companies sign on to Albuquerque’s ABQ-Net network

Four quantum-technology companies have committed to use Albuquerque’s ABQ-Net network to develop and validate security technologies, according to a July 28 announcement from Qunnect Inc., the company that built the network.

Infleqtion, Bandelier Technologies, Tensora and Aliro Technologies were identified as the first participating companies. The work is aimed at quantum-security applications, with the announcement citing defense, enterprise security and critical-infrastructure uses.

What ABQ-Net is

ABQ-Net is described by Qunnect as an open-access, entanglement-based quantum network. In plain terms, the network is intended to provide a shared setting where companies can test technologies that use quantum properties for communications and security-related functions.

Qunnect built ABQ-Net through a contract with Roadrunner Venture Studios. The network was created with support from the New Mexico Technology and Innovation Office, placing the project within the state’s broader quantum-technology effort.

The announcement described that wider state initiative as involving more than $450 million in quantum-company creation. It did not say that the full amount was spent on ABQ-Net, nor did it specify how much funding was allocated to the network itself.

Planned work, not demonstrated results

The companies’ commitments indicate planned development and validation work on the network, rather than a report of completed security performance. The announcement did not provide test data, performance benchmarks, a deployment timetable or commercial contracts for the participating companies.

That distinction matters for a field in which laboratory demonstrations, network prototypes and deployed services can have very different capabilities. The announcement establishes that the companies intend to use ABQ-Net as a testing environment; it does not establish that their technologies are production-ready or secure against every threat.

Bandelier Technologies said it plans to examine quantum entanglement together with artificial-intelligence models for defense and critical-infrastructure network resilience and security. The announcement did not report results from that planned examination.

Why Albuquerque is the test site

The four-company commitment positions Albuquerque as a site for evaluating quantum networking and quantum-secure communications technologies. The stated application areas—defense, enterprise security and critical infrastructure—are sectors where secure communications and network resilience are consequential.

For now, the next known step is the companies’ development and validation work on ABQ-Net. Qunnect’s announcement provides no date for when that work will begin, no deadline for results and no indication of when any resulting technology could move beyond the network into commercial or operational use.
