Mississippi opens disaster unemployment assistance after May storms
The Mississippi Department of Employment Security has announced that Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available for qualifying employees and self-employed people affected by severe weather in five counties during May 6-7, 2026.
The July 9 announcement follows a federal major-disaster declaration for Mississippi, identified as DR-4922-MS, issued June 30. The declaration covers destruction associated with severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding.
The assistance applies in Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln and Wilkinson counties. MDES said claims will be reviewed individually, meaning the announcement does not establish eligibility for every resident or worker in the five counties.
Who the assistance is for
According to MDES, eligible applicants include people who lived or worked in the affected areas and could not work because of the disaster. The program is available to qualifying employees as well as qualifying self-employed people.
That connection to the declared disaster is central to the program. The agency said it will determine eligibility one claim at a time rather than applying a blanket determination across the affected counties.
The announcement identifies the five named counties as the covered areas: Franklin, Lamar, Lawrence, Lincoln and Wilkinson. It does not describe the assistance as applying statewide or to counties outside that list.
MDES also does not provide a count of people who may be eligible. The announcement does not state a total amount of benefits that could be paid, an expected number of applications or an expected approval rate.
Storms, declaration and assistance period
The weather event behind the assistance occurred May 6-7, when severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding caused the damage covered by the declaration. Mississippi then received the major-disaster declaration, DR-4922-MS, on June 30.
MDES announced the unemployment assistance nine days later, on July 9. The sequence ties the available assistance to the May disaster and the subsequent declaration, rather than to unrelated job losses.
The disaster-assistance period runs from May 10, 2026, through Jan. 2, 2027. Those dates define the period identified by MDES for the assistance program.
The agency’s notice does not provide a separate final filing deadline beyond that stated assistance period. It also does not provide additional application-volume or approval information.
What the announcement changes
For qualifying workers and self-employed people whose ability to work was disrupted by the declared disaster, the announcement opens a state-administered route to unemployment assistance connected to that disaster period.
The availability of assistance is confirmed, but an individual outcome is not. Applicants in the covered counties must meet the program’s requirements, including the connection between the disaster and their inability to work, before eligibility is determined through MDES’s individual claim review.
The next confirmed administrative step is that MDES will evaluate claims individually. The agency’s announcement does not set out a projected number of approvals, a total benefit figure or a separate deadline for applications.
