Laramie County voters will decide Sixth Penny tax proposals on Aug. 18

Laramie County voters will decide multiple temporary Sixth Penny specific-purpose sales-tax proposals for county and City of Cheyenne projects in Wyoming’s Aug. 18, 2026 primary election.

The measures remain proposals until voters act. If the relevant propositions are approved, the tax would finance specified projects in Cheyenne and elsewhere in Laramie County, including infrastructure, public safety, emergency response, utilities, parks, community facilities and tourism-related projects.

Tax would be temporary

Laramie County says the Sixth Penny tax would end after the projects approved by voters are fully funded. The county estimates the collection period would average about five years.

That five-year figure is an estimate of the average collection period, not a stated fixed end date for every proposal. The county’s description ties the tax’s expiration to full funding of the projects that voters approve.

The county also estimates that about 40% of Sixth Penny revenue would come from visitors and tourism, 18% from industry and 42% from Laramie County residents.

Projects span county and city needs

The ballot proposals cover projects for both Laramie County and the City of Cheyenne. The county’s Sixth Penny overview identifies public safety and emergency response alongside utilities, parks, community facilities and infrastructure among the proposed project areas.

For voters, the election will decide whether to authorize the temporary sales-tax funding mechanism and its associated propositions. The measures should not be treated as an enacted tax change before the vote.

Election day is Aug. 18

Wyoming’s primary election is scheduled for Aug. 18, 2026. The Laramie County Clerk said early and absentee voting began July 21 at the county building, 309 W. 20th St. in Cheyenne.

The clerk also issued a campaign buffer-zone notice July 20. The next known decision point is election day, when voters will determine the outcome of the Sixth Penny propositions.
