Juneau Assembly schedules hearing on proposed temporary 3% areawide sales tax
The City and Borough of Juneau has scheduled a July 27 public hearing on a proposed temporary 3% areawide sales tax that would run for five years and be submitted to voters for approval.
Ordinance 2026-13 would authorize the tax from July 1, 2027, through July 1, 2032, if it proceeds through the required legislative and election steps. The ordinance calls for an election on whether the tax should be levied.
The public-hearing notice establishes that the measure is proposed and set for a hearing. It does not, by itself, establish that the Assembly has passed the ordinance or that a ballot question has been certified.
Proposed tax would be temporary
The proposal describes the tax as a 3% temporary areawide sales tax. Its stated term would begin July 1, 2027, and end July 1, 2032.
The hearing notice does not identify a specific spending purpose for tax proceeds. Any future use of the revenue is not established by the notice.
If approved through the Assembly process and by voters, the measure would create a new areawide sales-tax levy for the five-year period stated in the ordinance.
School bond also listed for October ballot
The same public-hearing notice lists Ordinance 2026-35, a proposal to authorize up to $16 million in general-obligation bonds for capital improvements at Juneau schools.
The school-bond proposition is slated for the Oct. 6, 2026, municipal election. The notice does not establish that voters have approved the borrowing; it identifies the proposal and its planned election date.
General-obligation bonds are a form of municipal borrowing. The proposed amount is capped at $16 million under Ordinance 2026-35.
Election filings have closed
Juneau’s City Clerk’s Office says the filing period for municipal candidates closed July 27, 2026, at 4:30 p.m.
The Oct. 6 election includes one areawide Assembly seat as well as Assembly seats for District 1 and District 2, according to the clerk’s municipal election information.
The scheduled hearing is the next identified procedural step for the two ordinances in the public notice. Final wording, Assembly action and ballot certification would need to be confirmed in the Assembly record before either measure could be described as adopted or placed before voters.
