Iowa election officials publish statewide 2026 general-election filing and ballot-access framework
Iowa’s Secretary of State has published and is maintaining the state’s candidate-list and ballot-access framework for the Nov. 3, 2026, general election, setting out which filing periods apply to offices at different levels of government.
The statewide election-administration information identifies the filing period for U.S. Senate, U.S. House and state offices as Feb. 23 through June 2, 2026, with a 5 p.m. deadline on June 2. That filing window has closed for those federal and state contests.
The framework is an administrative guide to ballot access and filing status, not an announcement of a newly filed candidate or a summary of individual races. The Secretary of State’s office does not provide a same-day statewide total of candidates in the material.
Statewide and legislative offices covered
The state offices covered by the June filing period include the governor and lieutenant governor ballot category, secretary of state, auditor, treasurer, secretary of agriculture and attorney general. State legislative seats are also included, along with the federal U.S. Senate and U.S. House offices.
These are the offices for which candidates needed to complete their filing during the Feb. 23-to-June 2 period. The later deadline described by state election officials does not apply to candidates for governor, Congress or the Legislature.
The Iowa Elections Division says its candidate list is updated as staff review and accept filings. That means the list reflects an administrative review-and-acceptance process rather than a fixed candidate count published at a single point in time.
Primary nominees do not file again
Candidates nominated in the primary are automatically placed on the Nov. 3 general-election ballot, according to the Secretary of State’s general-election guidance. Those nominees do not need to file again for the general election.
That distinction separates the earlier candidate-filing stage from general-election ballot placement for primary nominees. The state’s guidance addresses ballot access for the general election; it does not state that every listed candidate has completed separate ethics or campaign-disclosure obligations.
Aug. 26 deadline remains for specified local offices
Not every filing deadline ended in June. Certain county and local nonpartisan offices have filing deadlines extending to Aug. 26, 2026, at 5 p.m.
The offices identified for that later deadline include specified extension, soil-and-water and hospital-trustee offices. Candidates and local election administrators must use the deadline tied to the particular office rather than applying the Aug. 26 date to statewide, congressional or legislative contests.
The Secretary of State’s published framework therefore establishes two important points in the 2026 election calendar: the federal and state filing period has ended, while a narrower set of local filing opportunities remains open through the Aug. 26 deadline.

The next listed filing deadline is Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. for the specified local offices. The general election itself is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026.
For voters, candidates and election administrators, the framework provides the state’s official reference for the timetable governing who may appear on the general-election ballot. It also makes clear that filing requirements and deadlines depend on the office sought, rather than operating as one statewide deadline for every candidate.
