Boston voters face Aug. 22 registration deadline before September state primary
Boston voters face a Saturday, Aug. 22 registration deadline ahead of the Massachusetts state primary on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026.

What Boston has scheduled
Registration for the Sept. 1 primary closes Aug. 22. Early voting is scheduled to continue for seven days, from Aug. 22 through Aug. 28, before primary day.
Boston had not yet listed early-voting locations or operating times when the city’s election page was reviewed. Residents seeking to vote early will need to watch for the city’s later announcement of sites and hours.
The city’s schedule does not identify a particular ballot or candidate in its posted dates. Voters should not assume that every voter is eligible for the same primary ballot; the city’s published schedule establishes the timing of the primary and related local administration deadlines.
City role in election administration
The Election Department says Boston administers municipal, state and federal elections within the city. For the state primary, that role includes publishing the local registration and early-voting calendar for Boston residents.
The Aug. 22 deadline is the next listed registration cutoff before the Sept. 1 election. The early-voting window then provides a scheduled voting period ahead of primary day, although the city had not provided the locations and times in the reviewed posting.
After the state primary, Boston’s published calendar lists the general state election for Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. The city’s schedule therefore identifies two statewide election dates in the fall: the Sept. 1 primary and the Nov. 3 general election.
What remains to be announced
The city had not yet published where early voting would be available or when individual sites would be open. Those details remain the principal outstanding implementation information for voters planning to use the Aug. 22-28 early-voting period.
For now, the confirmed dates are Aug. 22 for voter registration, Aug. 22-28 for early voting, Sept. 1 for the Massachusetts state primary and Nov. 3 for the general state election.
