Illinois EV rebate application window opens with up to $4,000 for qualifying low-income buyers

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s new electric-vehicle rebate application cycle opened Aug. 1 and runs through Dec. 31, 2026. Eligible Illinois residents who bought qualifying new or used all-electric vehicles can apply during that period, subject to the program’s requirements and money available in the Electric Vehicle Rebate Fund.

The program offers a $2,000 rebate to eligible non-low-income applicants who purchased qualifying all-electric vehicles. Eligible low-income applicants may receive $4,000 for qualifying all-electric vehicles.

Deadline and rebate amounts

Applicants must apply within the current window. Illinois EPA says applications postmarked before Aug. 1, 2026, will not be considered, and the cycle closes Dec. 31, 2026.

The program also lists a $1,500 rebate for eligible electric motorcycles. For vehicles covered by the program, the listed selling-price limit is $80,000.

Who must meet program rules

The rebates are limited to Illinois residents. Applicants must meet requirements related to their purchase, income, residency, dealer, vehicle registration and ownership retention.

Those conditions mean the listed rebate amounts are not automatic for every electric-vehicle buyer. A person must satisfy the applicable program rules, including the requirements that apply to a low-income rebate applicant seeking the higher $4,000 amount.

Funding remains a condition

Illinois EPA has been appropriated up to $14 million for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2027. The appropriation is not a guarantee that every applicant will receive a payment.

Awarding rebates also depends on money remaining in the Electric Vehicle Rebate Fund. Applicants considering the program have until Dec. 31, 2026, to submit an application for this cycle, while ensuring their purchase and related documentation meet the state’s eligibility rules.
