Tennessee launches state-specific 988 identity after nearly 300,000 contacts

The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services has launched a state-specific identity for the Tennessee 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, a public-awareness update announced as the service marked its fourth anniversary in the state.

The agency announced the branding launch July 16, 2026. It said Tennessee’s 988 service has received nearly 300,000 calls, texts and chats from Tennesseans since July 2022.

The total is a count of contacts with the service, not a count of unique people. The announcement did not break the nearly 300,000 contacts into separate totals for calls, texts and chats.

A Tennessee-specific identity

The new branding is intended to make the Tennessee service more recognizable to residents, according to the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

The announcement concerns the statewide Tennessee 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. The service is intended for people experiencing mental-health emergencies.

State-specific branding identifies the Tennessee service in public-facing communications while keeping the focus on the 988 crisis-lifeline number. The department described the launch as a brand update, rather than announcing a new crisis service.

The department did not say that the branding changes who can use the service, how crisis responses are handled or what services are available. It also did not provide new operational targets connected to the launch.

Four years of contacts

The July 16 announcement coincided with the fourth anniversary of 988’s launch in Tennessee. The agency said the nearly 300,000 calls, texts and chats were received over the period beginning in July 2022.

That contact figure is the principal measure of service use included in the announcement. It shows the number of times Tennesseans reached the service through one of the listed communication methods, but it does not establish how many individual residents contacted it or how often any one person did so.

Likewise, the agency’s announcement did not provide figures that would allow the public to compare use of calls, texts and chats. It did not include a month-by-month trend, a county breakdown or information about the outcomes of individual contacts.

The release also did not announce new funding, staffing levels or performance targets for Tennessee 988. Those details were not part of the state’s branding announcement.

What the announcement means

For residents, the confirmed change is the introduction of a Tennessee-specific 988 identity designed to improve recognition of the service. The state continues to describe 988 as a resource for people experiencing mental-health emergencies.

The nearly 300,000-contact total provides context for the scale of use reported by the department since the service launched in Tennessee. Because the figure combines calls, texts and chats, it should not be read as an estimate of the number of people served.

No implementation deadline, additional rollout step or future performance benchmark was included in the announcement. The next known development is the continued public use of the Tennessee 988 service under its newly launched state-specific brand.

The department’s update does not make a claim about the branding’s effect on suicide rates or other health outcomes. It is a statewide recognition and access update tied to the service’s fourth year in Tennessee.
