Wichita bond proposal moves toward Nov. 3 ballot as district schedules school tours

Wichita Public Schools’ proposed bond election moved through a required state-level step in July, when Kansas State Board of Education materials included authorization for USD 259 to hold an election beyond its general bond-debt limitation.

The district says the bond question is scheduled for the Nov. 3, 2026, ballot. Wichita voters have not approved the proposal, and the materials reviewed do not identify a final bond amount.

The proposal concerns capital needs in Wichita schools, including facilities connected to career and technical education. State-board materials reference career and technical education facilities at South, Northwest, Heights and West high schools.

District tours focus on building needs

Wichita Public Schools is using a summer program called Tour Tuesdays to show residents building needs and explain the bond proposal. The tours are district outreach about a pending ballot question, rather than evidence that voters have endorsed it.

An Aug. 4 tour was scheduled to feature the Future Ready Manufacturing Center at North High School. The district has described the tours as a way for residents to see facilities and learn about the proposed bond issue before the November election.

The state-board materials identify four high schools in connection with career and technical education facilities: South, Northwest, Heights and West. The reviewed records do not establish which individual projects would be included in a final ballot measure or whether every referenced facility would be built through the proposal.

What remains before the election

The next known decision point is the scheduled Nov. 3 election, when Wichita voters would decide whether to approve the bond question. The available materials establish the authorization request and the district’s planned election date, but do not provide a final dollar figure for the bond.

The proposal comes as the district prepares for the 2026-27 school year. Wichita Public Schools lists Aug. 12 for orientation for new middle- and high-school students, followed by Aug. 13 as the first day of school for all students.

For families, students and residents, the bond discussion is tied to the condition and future use of district buildings and to facilities supporting career and technical education. For voters, the November ballot is the known next step; no voter approval has yet occurred.
