Jackson police deploy 24-hour Quick Response Team amid summer homicide spike
The Jackson Police Department has launched a Quick Response Team made up of two units operating 24 hours a day, adding officers for the July Fourth holiday period after a recent rise in violent crime and multiple homicides, including a triple homicide in June.
Mayor John Horhn and Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced the initiative July 2, 2026, at Jackson City Hall. More than 30 additional officers were deployed for the initial holiday-weekend operation.
Citywide team will use data to identify hot spots
The department said the two teams will use crime data to concentrate on areas identified as violence hot spots. At the same time, the teams are to remain available to answer calls anywhere in Jackson rather than being assigned only to one area.
The operation brings together officers from several parts of the department: narcotics, task force, intelligence, motorcycle and traffic, and uniformed officers. Extra dispatchers were also assigned to support the response.
