Smithsonian’s “By the People” initiative heads toward its August 2026 conclusion
The Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s nationwide “By the People: Conversations Beyond 250” initiative is entering its final month, with community-driven cultural programs scheduled to run through August 2026.
The initiative brings together state humanities councils and local partners for programs centered on cultural life, intergenerational conversation and culture bearers during the United States’ 250th-anniversary year. The Smithsonian says 51 humanities councils proposed events for the project, representing 46 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories.
The program window runs from January through August 2026, with Aug. 31 identified as the initiative’s end date. Individual events and schedules vary by state and local partner, rather than following one national calendar.
Local partners shape the programs
“By the People” is organized by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in collaboration with the Federation of State Humanities Councils and participating state humanities councils. The Smithsonian describes the programs as community-driven and created with local partners.
That structure means the initiative is not a single traveling festival or one uniform set of events. Councils proposed programs in their own communities, working with local cultural and humanities organizations.
