Sioux Falls street reconstruction at 42nd and 46th streets carries Sept. 11 completion date

Sioux Falls’ $1,765,765 neighborhood reconstruction project on portions of 42nd and 46th streets remained in active construction as of the city’s June 30 update, with a posted completion date of Sept. 11, 2026.

Both 42nd Street and 46th Street are closed to traffic within the work area during construction. The city’s project limits are 42nd Street from Klein Avenue to 1,500 feet east, and 46th Street from Ellis Road to Klein Avenue.

Soukop Construction is the contractor for the project, according to the City of Sioux Falls. The city lists the project value at $1,765,765. The project page does not identify funding sources or provide a newer progress update than June 30.

Utility work shifts across 42nd Street

The work is a reconstruction project rather than a completed roadway improvement. Its scope includes sanitary sewer, water-main and storm-drainage work, followed by roadway paving and restoration.

At the far east end of 42nd Street, underground work was complete as of June 30. On the west half of 42nd Street, crews had completed sanitary sewer and water-main installation.

That west-half section had also reached several roadway-preparation milestones: storm-sewer culverts, rough grading and the gravel roadway were complete. Crews had moved to the east half of 42nd Street to finish the remaining underground work.

Work begins on 46th Street

Underground work had begun at the west end of 46th Street by the June 30 update. The city did not specify a paving date for either street segment or describe a change to the posted Sept. 11 completion date.

For people traveling through the neighborhood, the immediate service effect is limited to the active work area: the city says both streets are closed there. The posted information does not say that all of either street is closed outside the construction limits.

The project combines utility replacement and drainage construction with the eventual road-building and restoration phases. The June update shows completed underground and base-preparation work in parts of 42nd Street, while utility work continued elsewhere on 42nd Street and began on 46th Street.

Residents and drivers can use the city’s project page for the current listed limits, closure information and schedule. The available update establishes a scheduled completion date, not a guarantee that the work will finish by that date.
