Columbia officials outline response after Finlay Park festival disturbances

Columbia officials have outlined public-safety measures and youth resources after disturbances ended the city’s Juneteenth Freedom Fest early at Finlay Park on June 20.

The city’s update followed a June 22 briefing at Finlay Park, 930 Laurel Street. Officials said the daytime portion of the festival drew thousands of residents and visitors without incident, before problems developed during the evening.

City reports security breaches and fights

According to the city, the evening disturbances involved juveniles, people bypassing security checkpoints and multiple fights. The city’s account does not say that all juveniles attending the festival were involved in the incidents.

Officers responded to incidents across the park, and additional law-enforcement resources were called in, the city said. Officials also reported that ammunition was recovered near the playground area.

The city did not report gunfire in its release. Its account does not provide the number of people arrested, injured or charged in connection with the disturbances.

The June 20 event ended early, according to the city. The city’s update focuses on the response after the disruption rather than providing a complete accounting of outcomes from the incidents.

Youth programs included in city response
